ChAI vs MetalAlert: a price forecast or the probability of a price change?

ChAI forecasts commodity prices with AI and gives you a daily price in dollars per tonne with a direction, for many commodities and horizons from one week to a year. MetalAlert does a narrower job: for each of the six LME base metals it gives the probability that the monthly average price moves 2%, 5% or 10% over the next one or three months, and emails you when those odds cross a level you set.

ChAI helps you understand where the market consensus stands. MetalAlert helps you act before that consensus catches up. Rather than relying on third-party forecasts that can reinforce herd mentality, MetalAlert focuses on identifying when the risk of rising metal costs is increasing, and when market conditions may present an opportunity to buy at a lower cost. By aligning market intelligence with your actual objective, reducing procurement costs, MetalAlert helps you make better-timed purchasing decisions, manage risk proactively, and capture savings when opportunities arise.

A price forecast or the probability of a price change?

Most buyers ask a forecaster one question: what will the price be? ChAI answers it: its public pages describe a daily point forecast in dollars per tonne, with a direction, for horizons from one week to a year. A better question is: how likely is the price to move, and by how much? That is what MetalAlert answers, with the probability that the monthly average price moves 2%, 5% or 10%. We explain the difference in Forecast vs. Probability of Price Change: A Better Way to Make Commodity Buying Decisions.

What a point forecast gives you. One number fits in an email, a slide or a budget line, and finance, procurement and sales can all use the same figure. Its accuracy is simple to measure.

Where it falls short.

What a probability gives you. "There is a 70% chance copper's monthly average rises more than 5% in the next three months." It describes the odds, not a single outcome. It matches real decisions, because a probability crossing a threshold is a clear trigger to buy, hedge or wait. It is honest about uncertainty, stays useful when prices swing hard, works as an alert, and can be checked over time: do the 70% calls come true about 70% of the time?

Its limits. It is harder to read, because many people hear "70%" as "it will happen". It needs long history and careful calibration. It gives no single number for the budget. And trust builds slowly: one outcome cannot prove a probability right or wrong, so it takes a track record.

Point forecast Probability of a % change
Answers What will the price be? How likely is a move, and how big?
Best for Budgets and planning Buy, hedge and timing decisions
Shows uncertainty No Yes
Handles volatility Poorly Well
How it is judged Error against the actual price Calibration over many calls

Use both, for different jobs. A forecast suits planning and budgeting. Probabilities suit purchasing and hedging: "lock in volume when the chance of a 5% rise passes 70%". If you need a budget number, a forecast tool covers it. If you need to know when to buy, hedge or wait, ask for the probability.

ChAI is the stronger choice for the budget side, with dollar forecasts up to twelve months and many more commodities. MetalAlert is built for the timing side.

How they differ

Coverage. This is where ChAI is clearly broader. Its sample site lists the LME base metals plus COMEX copper, steel products, scrap, iron ore and battery metals. MetalAlert covers the six LME base metals and nothing else today. If you buy steel or scrap, MetalAlert does not cover them yet.

Horizons. ChAI shows horizons from one week to twelve months. MetalAlert shows one and three months. For a twelve-month budget, ChAI offers more. We have not tested whether a six-month probability stays reliable, so we do not publish one.

Alerts and delivery. MetalAlert is built around alerts: you pick a metal, a direction, a size and a horizon, then choose to be emailed when the probability reaches a level you set or moves by a set amount. We did not find alerts on ChAI's pages. ChAI's product is a web app; a third-party review says it has a REST API, which we could not confirm on ChAI's own pages. MetalAlert has an API and an Excel connection on its Organization plan.

Explaining the move. Both show drivers. ChAI shows named drivers per horizon with adjustable sensitivity. MetalAlert shows what pushes each probability up and what holds it down, with each driver's share, in every alert email and in the app, plus a written summary on each metal's page.

Evidence the numbers are good. A probability can be checked: across many past predictions, a "30%" should have happened about 30% of the time. MetalAlert tests this walk-forward on months the model never trained on, with a frozen holdout from January 2021, and shows the record per metal in the app. The method and a selection of the research log are on our Methodology page. We did not find a backtest or calibration on ChAI's pages; a 2024 customer-facing review described a forecast band, while its 2026 sample pages show single points.

Price. MetalAlert's prices are in our Terms: US$99 a month for the Individual plan and US$749 a month for the Organization plan, with annual billing 10% lower. Sign-up is not open yet; you can book a walkthrough. ChAI does not publish prices; you ask its sales team.

Beyond forecasting. ChAI also sells price insurance (ChAI Protect), arranged with A-rated insurers. MetalAlert does not offer insurance or analyst consulting.

Who should choose which

MetalAlert fits you if: - you buy LME base metals and decide when to buy, hedge or wait - you want an email when the odds move, with the reasons - you want a method you can check, and a price you can read before a sales call

ChAI fits you if: - you buy across many commodities, including steel, scrap or battery metals - you need dollar forecasts and horizons up to a year for budgeting - you want price insurance linked to a forecast - you are a large organization used to a sales-led process

Some teams will want both: a price view for the budget and the probability of a price change to time purchases. That is our view, not a claim about how either product is used.

Moving over or trying it

There is no data to migrate: MetalAlert reads public LME prices, so there is nothing to export from ChAI. You can run both side by side for a month and compare. Book a 20-minute walkthrough and we will show the alerts and the record on your own metals.
