Signal (Grand View Research) vs MetalAlert: a monthly forecast or the probability of a price change?

Signal is a monthly pricing-intelligence service from Grand View Research. It publishes reports and a database covering base metals, battery metals, steel products and scrap across many regions, with price forecasts of six months or more built from linear-trend models and reviewed by analysts. Sample reports are free; the full reports are bought through a request form.

MetalAlert gives, for each of the six LME base metals, the probability that the monthly average price moves 2%, 5% or 10% over the next one or three months, refreshed on weekdays, with an email when the odds cross a level you set.

Signal helps you understand where the market consensus stands. MetalAlert helps you act before that consensus catches up. Rather than relying on third-party forecasts that can reinforce herd mentality, MetalAlert focuses on identifying when the risk of rising metal costs is increasing, and when market conditions may present an opportunity to buy at a lower cost. By aligning market intelligence with your actual objective, reducing procurement costs, MetalAlert helps you make better-timed purchasing decisions, manage risk proactively, and capture savings when opportunities arise.

A price forecast or the probability of a price change?

Most buyers ask a forecaster one question: what will the price be? Signal answers it with monthly point forecasts, six months or more ahead, built from linear-trend models and reviewed by analysts. A better question is: how likely is the price to move, and by how much? That is what MetalAlert answers, with the probability that the monthly average price moves 2%, 5% or 10%, refreshed on weekdays. We explain the difference in Forecast vs. Probability of Price Change: A Better Way to Make Commodity Buying Decisions.

What a point forecast gives you. One number fits in an email, a slide or a budget line, and finance, procurement and sales can all use the same figure. Its accuracy is simple to measure.

Where it falls short.

What a probability gives you. "There is a 70% chance copper's monthly average rises more than 5% in the next three months." It describes the odds, not a single outcome. It matches real decisions, because a probability crossing a threshold is a clear trigger to buy, hedge or wait. It is honest about uncertainty, stays useful when prices swing hard, works as an alert, and can be checked over time: do the 70% calls come true about 70% of the time?

Its limits. It is harder to read, because many people hear "70%" as "it will happen". It needs long history and careful calibration. It gives no single number for the budget. And trust builds slowly: one outcome cannot prove a probability right or wrong, so it takes a track record.

Point forecast Probability of a % change
Answers What will the price be? How likely is a move, and how big?
Best for Budgets and planning Buy, hedge and timing decisions
Shows uncertainty No Yes
Handles volatility Poorly Well
How it is judged Error against the actual price Calibration over many calls

Use both, for different jobs. A forecast suits planning and budgeting. Probabilities suit purchasing and hedging: "lock in volume when the chance of a 5% rise passes 70%". If you need a budget number, a forecast tool covers it. If you need to know when to buy, hedge or wait, ask for the probability.

Signal is the stronger choice for the budget side, with forecasts six months or more ahead across many metals and regions. MetalAlert is built for the timing side.

How they differ

Report or alert. Signal is a publication: each month you get new assessments and forecasts to read, and you act on them. MetalAlert is a monitor: it tells you when the odds change, and you do not have to read a report to find out. Some teams want the report; others want the alert.

Coverage. Signal is clearly broader: base and battery metals, steel products, scrap, and regions beyond Europe and the US. MetalAlert covers the six LME base metals only. If you buy steel, scrap or Asian regional prices, MetalAlert does not cover them today.

Horizons and freshness. Signal's forecasts run six months or more but update monthly. MetalAlert looks one and three months ahead and refreshes on weekdays, so it can change between monthly reports.

Explaining the move. MetalAlert shows what pushes each probability up and what holds it down, with each driver's share, in every alert and in the app. Signal describes its method (triangulation of sources, outlier checks, analyst review) but we did not find driver detail for each forecast.

Evidence the numbers are good. MetalAlert tests every model on months it never trained on, with a frozen holdout from January 2021, and shows a record per metal in the app. The method is on our Methodology page. We did not find accuracy figures for Signal's forecasts on its pages.

Price. MetalAlert's prices are in our Terms: US$99 a month for the Individual plan and US$749 a month for the Organization plan. Sign-up is not open yet; you can book a walkthrough. Signal does not publish prices; you buy reports through a request form, or take an enterprise licence.

Who should choose which

MetalAlert fits you if: - you buy LME base metals and decide when to buy, hedge or wait - you want an email when the odds change, not a monthly document - you want a record you can check and a price you can read

Signal fits you if: - you want a monthly report across many metals, including steel, scrap and battery metals - you buy in regions beyond Europe and the US - you want forecasts six months or more ahead and are happy with a report format - you want to start with a free sample report

Trying it next to a report

There is nothing to migrate. Many teams could keep a monthly report and add MetalAlert for timing. Book a 20-minute walkthrough and we will show the alerts and the record on your metals.
